Water Intoxication

waterbottle.jpgAt first I thought that this story was just stupid but now I realize that it was just tragic. A local Sacramento woman died while trying to win a Wii game console during a morning radio show contest. The story is here: http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/108430.html if you need a username and password use beesucks and beesucks.

I was thinking with all the press about the Chico hazing incident how could anyone think this was a good idea? Well, maybe if they spaced the water out with smaller quantities it would be safe. Well, I guess not.

To top it all off, during the contest a nurse called to warn that it was dangerous to drink too much water but it was ignored by the radio station staff by the fact that the contestants had signed waivers although they were never warned that their health was in any danger.

Do you think it was the water, or the lack or going to the bathroom? From what I hear it was only around 2 gallons. My wife makes it a point to drink at least 2 gallons of water a day, of course that is spread out over a 9-10 hour period. Oh yeah, and she does not hold it in. The Radio station is to blame I would say, but what kind of idiot do you have to be to try and hold your urine for any extended length of time. This is from Wikipedia:

Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water.[
